Welcome To Year 4!

Year 4 Showcase of Drumming

Year 4 under the guidance of Mr Navacar, have learnt to play a dholak. Enjoy watching their performance. They have all worked really hard practising and developing their drumming technique.

Welcome back to school 🙂

Year 4 have had a brilliant first week back altogether. Take a look at the pictures of our activities from the week.

Lockdown 2021

In Year 4 we blended our learning in home and school throughout ‘lockdown’.  This meant that children at home joined us for  four or five live lessons every day, in all subjects, through Google Meet.  All the children, whether in home or at school, were then doing the same learning activities through Google Classroom.  This means that no one lost out on the opportunity to learn!

English

In English we have been looking at explanation texts and have written our explanations all about the human digestive system. Take a look at some of our fantastic work!

Mathematics

In Maths this term, we have been learning about the column method for addition and subtraction with numbers up 4-digits. We have also been learning how to estimate and check our answers using the inverse operation.

Science

In Science we have been learning all about the human digestive system and food chains. Take a peek at some of the fantastic work we have produced 🙂

Religious Education

In Religious Education, we have been answering the question ‘How does Jesus show his power and authority?’

Foundation Subjects

In Year 4 we study the foundation subjects which include Geography, History, Art and Design, Design Technology, French, Physical Education, Music and Computing. In the carousel you will find lots of examples of our learning this term.

Reading Books

This year we are starting to allocate home reading books online, please read with your child at least 5 times per week.

PE

PE will commence in the Summer term when swimming has finished.

Swimming

Our swimming lessons are every other Tuesday afternoon, please ensure your child brings their swimming kits on this day. The lessons will take place at Johnson’s Swimming School.

Please click here to visit Johnson's Swimming School website.

Homework

Spellings and Homework will now be placed on Google Classroom, the platform we used during home learning. If you are unable to access this please let me know and I will send home paper copies. Spellings are set every Monday and tested on the following Friday. Homework is set on a Friday and needs to be handed in the following Thursday. Please don't hesitate to contact me through Class Dojo if you need any support with homework.

Labelling Belongings

Please label all of your child’s belongings, this is really important! We encourage the children to be responsible for their own belongings, however our classroom is very busy and it can be very difficult to identify belongings with no names in them.

Class Dojo

We use Class Dojo as our main form of communication across nursery and school. All you need to do is download the app on your smartphone or tablet, and type in the code we have given you. Please check Class Dojo on a regular basis so that you don’t miss any news or information. We also have a class page that we update regularly, showing you all of the fun things we get up to in class!

Attendance and Punctuality

At Darwen St James our aim is to promote good attendance and punctuality in partnership with parents and carers in Early Years, ensuring that good habits are formed early. Year 4 begins at 9.10 am and it is vital that your child arrives on time and ready to learn. If your child is unwell, please contact the school office on 01254 703260 to let us know. Please try and arrange appointments around the school day when possible. If your child does have an appointment during school time, please bring their letter or appointment card into the school office.

Worship Through Celebration

Every Friday at 9.20 am we have our online worship through celebration to celebrate the pupils’ achievements throughout the week. All parents/carers will be invited to join us once the restrictions are lifted. Certificates and a green jumper are awarded to pupils from each class to recognise an outstanding achievement that week. We also clap and cheer for anyone who has had a birthday, which is great fun. We hear about the children who have been representing school in sport or music or any special events and we also hear about children who do activities outside of school like dancing or lifesaving. We also see which class has gathered the most Class Dojo points and who has had the highest attendance. There is lots of cheering and clapping at Our worship through celebration. We have a lot to celebrate here at Darwen St James!
