Light

We have continued our topic on Light this term. The children in class have been creating shadows using torches and different shape and sized balls, they also had some translucent balls too. Those at home found different light sources to make shadows, they used mobile phones, torches and lamps. They have also been finding shadows around the classroom or in their home. They had to name the light source and the object that had created it and measure the length of the shadow. We looked at sundials and how shadows can be useful. The children each made their own sundial and used the torches to experiment with how they were used to tell the time. Mrs Gettins made a video showing the children how they can do this at home. To end the topic we had some fun making animal puppets and adding translucent pieces to them. Take a look and see if you can work out what animals we made.

Rocks

We have started our new topic on Rocks. The children began by sorting rocks into different categories based on their properties and then the rock type. We learned about metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous rocks and some of their different uses. The children also designed a church and thought about the rocks / materials they would use.

We learned how metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous rocks are formed and went outside on a rock hunt too. We found rocks of all shapes and sizes and thought about whether they were placed by man or formed naturally. We used the rocks to make some images, take a look at our house ‘with furniture inside’ and smiley face! We then looked in detail at where in the world different kinds of rocks can be found. We spent time researching this on the internet and completing a table with our results.
