Here you can find all the information for our Year 2 Class.

Reading at Home

This year we are starting to allocate home reading books online. These books are exciting and fun and help children practise their phonics sounds that they are learning in school. The books are both fiction and non-fiction books. Every child has their own login so can they can access the reading at home!

Please click the lion to access your e-book.

Active Maths

Active Maths is every Tuesday afternoon with Mrs Mountain. Please make sure your child has a full P.E kit in school. We will send it home at the end of every half term to wash.

Letters and Sounds is taught twice a day in KS1 to help catch up with missed learning during lockdown. We play fun games and write superhero sentences to practise the sounds we are learning.

Homework will also be set on PurpleMash. Your child should have a login for this great website full of fun activities and games. Please click here to visit Purple Mash.

Labelling Belongings.

Please label all of your child’s belongings, this is really important! We encourage the children to be responsible for their own belongings, however our classroom is very busy and it can be very difficult to identify belongings with no names in them.

We use Class Dojo as our main form of communication across nursery and school. All you need to do is download the app on your smartphone or tablet, and type in the code we have given you. Please check Class Dojo on a regular basis so that you don’t miss any news or information. We also have a class page that we update regularly, showing you all of the fun things we get up to in class!

Attendance and Punctuality.

At Darwen St James our aim is to promote good attendance and punctuality in partnership with parents and carers in Early Years, ensuring that good habits are formed early. Year 2 begin their school day at 8.55 am and it is vital that your child arrives on time and ready to learn. Our free breakfast club starts at 8.40 am in the school hall, and is available to all of our pupils here at Darwen St James. If your child is unwell, please contact the school office on 01254 703260 to let us know. Please try and arrange appointments around the school day when possible. If your child does have an appointment during school time, please bring their letter or appointment card into the school office.

Every Friday at 9.20 am we have our online worship through celebration to celebrate the pupils’ achievements throughout the week. All parents/carers will be invited to join us once the restrictions are lifted. Certificates and a green jumper are awarded to pupils from each class to recognise an outstanding achievement that week. We also clap and cheer for anyone who has had a birthday, which is great fun. We hear about the children who have been representing school in sport or music or any special events and we also hear about children who do activities outside of school like dancing or lifesaving. We also see which class has gathered the most Class Dojo points and who has had the highest attendance. There is lots of cheering and clapping at Our worship through celebration. We have a lot to celebrate here at Darwen St James!

Meet Our Year 2 Academy Councillors!

Meet Eleanor and Isaac.

Eleanor and Isaac were elected by the class to be our Year 2 Student Council representatives.  They have the responsibility of listening carefully to everyone’s ideas and suggestions for making our school even better. They will have to go to (virtual) meetings with all the other student council representatives from other classes and share ideas from our class. They will also have to pass on messages and any information to the class and tell us about any exciting upcoming events!

It’s lockdown again but that is not stopping us learning!

Some of us are in school and some of us are at home. The children at home are joining us for live lessons! This is called Blended Learning.

It’s great to see everyone on the big screen in our classroom!

Blended Learning - English

In English we are enjoying reading Dougal’s Deep Sea Diary. Children at home are joing us virtually for these lessons.

Dougal dreams about finding the underwater city of Atlantis. We used Purple Mash at school and at home to draw what we think Atlantis will look like.

Dougal's Deep Sea Diary - New Words

We have found some new and interesting words in Dougal’s Deep Sea Diary.

Dougal's Deep Sea Diary - Sequencing

We have sequenced part of the story.

Dougal has found Atlantis!

Blended History

In History we are learning about Darwen in the past.

We have learnt about famous people who were born in Darwen. Did you know there was a famous footballer, a strongman, an artist, a spy and a singer in a band all born in Darwen?

We put the dates that these people were born into a timeline.

Blended Reading

We are reading books every day at home and at school.  Children at home are reading online using the Collins website. Children in school are reading physical books and the online books.

After reading our books, we all do the same reading activity.
