Year 4 History - Roman Artifacts
This week in year 4, we became historians as we examined artefact found at Vindolanda, a historical Roman fort along Hadrian's Wall. We found similarities with the items between our life and theirs, and made predictions about what each object was!
Year 6 History - Evaluating Sources and Creating Viking Sagas
In history year 6 have been analysing sources relating to the Vikings to try and understand more about Viking society. We looked at images of helmets and coins, which show two different sides of Viking civilisation.
Year 4 History - Roman Army Foundations
This week in History, we looked at Roman army formations and why this meant The Romans were so successful. We took our learning outside and pretended to be the Roman army, using our whiteboards as shields!
Year 6 History -The Vikings
In history this week Year 6 have continued their learning relating to the Vikings. They analysed and compared two versions of the same Viking saga, and then created their own. They included both fictional elements, information that was historically accurate and worked with a focus on high level vocabulary.
Year 3 History - Identifying Artifacts From The Stone Age.
In this week's History lesson Year 3 became archaeologists. They looked at pictures of different artifacts that were found buried in a Stone Age grave and gathered information answering the questions, What is it? What is it made from? What was it used for?
Year 2 History - What Was This School Like In The Past?
Year 2 two investigated what Darwen St James was like in the past. We had Mrs Ainsworth come and answer our questions all about it. Mrs Ainsworth used to come to this school when she was a little girl.
Year 4 DT - Making Roman Sandals
This week in year 4, as part of our History topic and DT topic, we have made some 'mock-up' Roman sandals. We had to be very innovative in our thinking and some of us had to start over when we realised we could not get our feet inside! It was great fun, and we now have a good idea of what our real ones will look like.
Nursery - UTW - Exploring Elements Of Routine That Happen During The Day And Night
The children in Nursery class have been working on their understanding of routine and events that happen during the day and night. The little ones selected items of interest from the basket and we discussed what the item was, what we do with it and when we might need it. The children mimicked using the items and had a good understanding on what each item was for, however It was interesting to hear how many children wear wellies to bed, haha! Nursery class really enjoyed this activity, so it will be available in provision for them to continue to explore and further support their understanding on day and night routines.
Year 6 History: Looking at Viking Sources
In our History lesson, year 6 have been looking at a range of secondary sources, showing artifacts from The Vikings. We used our previous knowledge and critical thinking to evaluate these sources.
Year 3 History - Recognising The Chronology And Significance Of Prehistory
Year 3 have been looking at ordering events from history on a timeline. They worked in groups to lay out a timeline and then discussed between themselves what events they knew had happened and placed them on the line using post it notes. They thought of events such as the Coronation of King Charles, World War 1 and 2, The Great Fire of London and Florence Nightingale.
Year 6 History - Vikings
In History this week year 6 have started looking at the topic on the Vikings, started by working together to create a scaled timeline.
Pre School- UTW- Celebrations
We have had lots of fun at our Pre School party. We played party games, popping bubbles and catching balloons with our friends. The children enjoyed being together and sharing the experience of doing different activities for the day.
Nursery- UTW-Celebration
We have had lots of fun playing party games in Nursery. Learning to play pass the parcel and musical chairs and trying to understand that we might not always win. We developed our fine motor skills popping bubbles with our fingers and catching the balloons when they went up into the air. We enjoyed sharing the celebration with the Pre School children.
Year 3 History - Preparing for the Afterlife.
During their topic on the Ancient Egyptians Year 3 have been learning about the process of Mummification and how the Egyptians were prepared for the afterlife.
Year 5 History - Mind Maps Of The Industrial Revolution.
In our History lesson the children used their knowledge of the Industrial Revolution to create a mind map.
Year 5 PSHE Rosa Parks Story
The children looked at discrimination within our PSHE . They watched a clip and discussed how the children felt then they read the story of Rosa Parks. Afterwards they looked at how to treat people with respect.
Year 3 English - Identifying a Key Idea in a Paragraph
Today in English, Year 3 have been identifying key ideas in paragraphs about the Ancient Egyptians. Each group were given packs containing paragraphs and subheadings. They had to read each paragraph and match it with the correct subheading. Taking it in turns the children then moved around the room to see if the paragraphs had been sorted correctly.
Year 3 English - IdentifyingKey Words in Paragraphs
In English today, Year 3 worked in small groups to research facts about Tutankhamun and the Pharaohs. They then shared their facts with rest of the class.
Year 6 British Values
In our Class worship Year 6 asked and talked about the question 'Can the past help us learn about modern life?'
Year 5 History - The Industrial Revolution
In Year 5 the children looked at the children working the Industrial Revolution. The children then went on to complete a myth busting treasure hunt.
Year 3 - History - Being an Archaeologist
Year 3 have been following in the steps of Harold Carter, an archaeologist that discovered the tomb of Tutankhamon. They investigated a tomb looking out for various artefacts.
Year 1 - History
In History, Year 1 are learning about Sir Francis Drake. The photographs show the children following the route of Sir Francis Drakes circumnavigation of the world on his galleon, The Golden Hinde.
Year 3 - English Mummies and Their Sarcophagus'
Year 3 started their new topic in English writing a non-chronological report about the Ancient Egyptians. As an introduction to the topic today they made their own Sarcophagus and turned a peg into a mummy.
Year 3 - History - Ancient Egyptians
Year 3 have been testing their knowledge on the Ancient Egyptians. They completed a quiz answering different questions hidden around the classroom and working together in pairs they sorted objects in a picture into modern day and ancient objects.
Year 1 - History - Sir Francis Drake
in History, Year 1 have been learning about Sir Francis Drake. In these photographs, the children are using the vocabulary they have learned about life aboard a galleon to produce posters.
Pre-School - Transport
In Understanding the world this week we have looked at old and new transport. We looked at different pictures of new transport and we recognised a lot of them but then we looked at old transport pictures and how they used to be. The children picked out features and questioned why it was like that. We then played a matching game with the objects and pictures.
Year 2 History - Comparing Buildings
In our History lesson today we are looking at how different our town looks 100 years ago compared to how it looks today. Year 2 are working in teams to create a timeline of old buildings to new buildings.
2’s Room - Dinosaurs
We have had lots of fun today cleaning the dirty dinosaurs. We talked about being dirty and how we could get clean. We had so much fun!
Remembrance Day - 2 Minute Silence
Today we carried out a 2 minute silence to honour the lives of those killed in the war.
Y6 History - Vikings
This afternoon Year 6 looked for evidence about the Vikings around the classroom, to discover all about who the Vikings really were, and if they really were as bloodthirsty and mean as we had thought!
Explorers Exhibition - Reception Class Visit
Throughout today, Reception class have been in small groups to visit our 'Explorers Exhibition' that was kindly set up by Mrs Thompson. The children have thoroughly enjoyed looking at the different items and learning about some of the more obscure objects. The children had some very good ideas and opinions about the items set out. Ask them about some of their favourite pieces of exploration equipment or memorabilia when they get home.
Year 5 - Archaeology
Today Year 5 have become part of Basil Browns archaeologist team and investigated the empty grave. They dug through the graves to find clues and tried to work out who the grave could have belonged to. It was great fun and the children showed off their teamwork skills.
Year 4 - An Action Packed Week.
Year 4 have had another busy and action packed week. Some of our highlights this week include: identifying and finding plants, spending our tokens in our first ever visit at the school's shop, being a human boat in a storm (!) and finding historical evidence to decide whether Theseus and the Minotaur really did happen.
Y4 Trip to Ribchester Roman Museum.
Year 4 had a fantastic day in Ribchester, visiting the Roman Museum. We learnt lots about the Romans and held some Roman artefacts that were over 2000 year old! We all had the chance to wear Roman armour and we held some deadly weapons! We loved exploring the museum and looking at the remains of the Roman fort.
The Gunpowder Plot - Y2
Year 2 have been learning about Parliament today and watched a video about the Gunpowder Plot. We have created our own rockets but we haven't used any gunpowder!
Y6 - Vikings!
Today Year 6 have had an interesting lesson looking at a “gallery” of Viking archaeological finds and deciding how it shows that the Vikings were actually very different to their fierce image!
