Nursery - Music - Christmas Songs
This week, our music lessons centered around seasonal exploration through our Christmas Song Bag. This activity was highly engaging and encouraged early decision-making and participation. The children thoroughly enjoyed the element of surprise and choice, taking turns to select an item from the bag, which prompted a new seasonal song. They have been enthusiastically learning the new songs and the actions that pair with them. This activity successfully develops memory skills, listening and attention, and rhythm, all while building their confidence in singing and moving in response to music.
Year 5 Music - Learning about Blues Music
This week, Year 5 began their new music unit, diving straight into the origins and unique sounds of The Blues. Students discovered the powerful historical and emotional context of this genre, learning how The Blues developed in the Deep South of America and how it was used to express feelings of sadness, hardship, and hope. We focused on listening skills, identifying the genre's key features, such as the frequent use of the call and response structure and the distinctive twelve-bar chord progression. The children enthusiastically explored the concept of the blue note (a slightly flattened note that gives the music its emotional depth) and began to understand how simple musical elements can communicate deep feelings. This engaging introduction sets the stage for future lessons, where Year 5 will develop their understanding of chord structures and even begin composing their own blues pieces.
Year 4 Music
Year 4 have been practising their singing and choral styles in Music this week and have enjoyed discussing the words / lines and singing a new song together.
Nursery - Music - Change In Tempo, Fast And Slow
In our music lesson today, the children focused on exploring the musical element of tempo, or speed, through hands-on play. We used drums as our instruments, instructing the children to practice drumming really, really fast and then really slowly. To support their understanding of the difference between fast and slow movements and speed in music, the children watched a visual video aid. This video featured a rabbit and a turtle, accompanied by corresponding fast and slow music. This multi-sensory approach successfully helped the children grasp the concept of tempo and how to control the speed of their movements while playing instruments.
Reception- Music- Festival of Diwali
Our Reception children have been exploring a vibrant and exciting cultural festival called Diwali, and it's been an absolute blast! Diwali is often called the Festival of Lights, celebrated by millions of people around the world. It’s a time of great joy, sparkling lights, delicious food, and wonderful music. We wanted our little learners to experience this joy, not just by seeing pictures, but by feeling the music and moving their bodies! We started by listening to some beautiful and lively Indian music. It was so different from some of the songs we usually sing – with new instruments and exciting rhythms! The children described it as "bouncy," "happy," and even "making me want to jump!" This is such an important part of learning about other cultures – understanding that music sounds different all over the world, and each style has its own special feeling. To help us connect with the music and express ourselves, we brought out a magical basket of scarves and ribbons! These weren't just any scarves; they were bright, colourful, and so silky to touch. The children absolutely loved using them to dance. We talked about how the lights of Diwali flicker and dance, and how fireworks sparkle and explode in the sky. Then, we tried to make our scarves and ribbons do the same thing!
Year 4 Music - Making The Sounds Of A Rain Storm
Year 4 music students brought the sounds of a rainstorm to life! After watching an orchestra video that demonstrated how to create rain effects using only their hands, the class worked in groups. They began slowly and quietly, gradually building the intensity and speed of the storm with actions like finger clicks, claps, and jumping. The piece progressed from a gentle shower to a loud, quick downpour.
Reception- Music- Environmental Sounds
In music this week we have been using our listening ears to recognise the different sounds all around us. We had different picture cards to match up to the sounds we heard on the cd player. The children supported each other if they were unsure what the sound was. We talked about the everyday sounds we hear when we are walking to school or in the garden and if they are loud or quiet sounds.
Reception- Music- Getting To Know The Musical Instruments
In music this week the children have been introduced to different music instruments. We listened to the sounds they make and how we can make them have loud and quiet sounds. We can use them fast and slow and using these methods we can play them to different songs. The children each selected a different instrument and we selected different songs to sing. We matched up the song to how the instrument could be played. Twinkle Twinkle was a slow and quiet sound on the musical instruments but The Grand Old Duke of York was loud and fast.
Nursery - Music - What Sound Does The Instrument Make?
In our recent music lesson, the children had a wonderful time exploring and experimenting with a variety of instruments. They were encouraged to investigate each one, learning about the different ways we can play them and listening carefully to the unique sounds they produce. The children enjoyed creating the different sounds. To help them further understand how to control the sound, they practiced mimicking movements to get a specific sound from the instruments. This interactive approach helped them develop their listening skills and their ability to follow instructions, all while creating some amazing music together!
Year 2 - Computing - Making Music
Today, the children had an engaging computing lesson focused on "Making Music." They used headphones and eagerly explored music creation on their laptops. Each student was immersed in the activity, observing the colorful interfaces that guided them in composing their own tunes. It was evident they enjoyed experimenting with various sounds and arranging them to create unique musical pieces.
Year 5 Music - Responding to Music with Art
This week in Music, Year 5 engaged in a wonderfully creative exercise, listening intently to various pieces and translating their auditory experiences into abstract drawings. Their artwork beautifully captured both the sounds they heard and the emotions the music evoked, resulting in a collection of truly interesting and unique interpretations.
Year 2 - Computing - Making Music
We have had fun this week composing digital music and learning all about tone, beats and volume.
