Year 1 - Phonics - Tricky Word Trees
This week, Year 1 brought some festive cheer into our phonics session by combining their learning with Christmas fun! We've been working on identifying and correctly writing those essential 'Tricky Words.'
Y1 Maths
We've had a brilliant week in Year 1 getting back to basics and cementing the vital number skills we learned throughout the Autumn term! Our focus has been on mastering the link between numerals (the number symbol) and the written number word—all through fun, practical activities!
Year 1 - English - Writing
What a fantastic start to the day we had during our morning register! Year 1 were busy focusing on a vital skill: writing detailed sentences about things they could see. This activity is a wonderful way to wake up our brains and practice all those important writing conventions we've been learning.
School Council- PSHE- Spreading Christmas Cheer in the Community
Our school council members took on a wonderfully heartwarming project this week by organizing and performing a special nativity play exclusively for the residents of a local nursing home. The pupils demonstrated incredible dedication, rehearsing their roles as Mary, Joseph, shepherds, and angels to bring the traditional story to life. The performance was met with warm applause and generated a tangible sense of festive cheer among the residents, providing a lovely inter-generational connection. Following the play, the children personally greeted the residents, shared handmade cards, and offered sincere wishes for a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year, reinforcing the school's commitment to community spirit and kindness during the holiday season.
Year 1 Computing: Collecting data
In computing this week, Year 1 had an unplugged lesson exploring data. First, we answered questions about some of our favourite things, we voted using cubes. Once everyone had picked their favourite, we could see some very interesting information ... DATA! The information that can be collected and used is called "data" and our data showed that Year 1's favourite animal is a rabbit and our favourite ice cream flavour is a tie between chocolate and strawberry.
Year 1 Phonics: 'ou' as in 'house'
One of our many sounds in Year 1 phonics this week was the phase 5 sound 'ou' as in 'house'. The children listened carefully to the phonemes in different 'ou' words when segmenting, and then used our letter join formation to write the graphemes. It sounds like a lot of work and Year 1 should be shouting loud and proud about their learning! (P.s. How many 'ou' words did you see here?)
Year 1 PE: Tracking the ball
This week in PE, Year 1 focused on developing the vital skill of tracking the ball. This involves using both their eyes and their body to follow the ball's movement . Each child had to defend their net against an opponent trying to score, which meant constantly keeping their eyes on the ball, anticipating where it was going, and using quick body movements to successfully intercept or block the shot. The children demonstrated great effort in staying balanced and reacting quickly to the path of the ball, which is a key skill for many sports!
Year 1 Maths: Understanding 10
This week, Year 1 focused on understanding the number 10. We used counters and ten frames to test different number combinations to make our whole number: 10. We also did some SILENT maths, and used our fingers to represent the different number bonds that make 10. To consolidate this knowledge, children worked independently on various activities to reinforce their understanding of number bonds within 10, helping them develop speed and confidence within the subject.
Year 1 - PE - Dribbling Skills
Developing great control in PE! Year 1 focused on dribbling the ball with different parts of the foot and changing direction around the cones.
Year 1 - Maths - Sorting 3D Shapes
Year 1 mathematicians worked collaboratively to sort 3D shapes! We explored the properties of cones, cubes, and spheres, deciding if they roll or stack, and why.
Online Safety - Tracking Devices
Tracking devices were designed to help people find lost belongings, but they’ve also opened the door to worrying forms of misuse. This week’s #WakeUpWednesday explores how Bluetooth trackers like AirTags and SmartTags can be misused for stalking, bullying and invading young people’s privacy.
