Nursery - Communication And Language - Decorating The Christmas Tree
The children in nursery class were full of excitement this week as we marked the start of the Christmas countdown by decorating our Christmas tree. This activity became a rich foundation for developing communication and descriptive language. While using their fine motor skills to carefully hang the decorations, the children spontaneously engaged in conversation, actively discussing the different sizes, shapes, and colours they could see. This provided a natural opportunity to expand their descriptive vocabulary. Furthermore, the excitement prompted the children to share personal experiences, talking about their own Christmas trees at home and sharing their thoughts and knowledge about Santa. The activity successfully promoted peer-to-peer communication and the sharing of imaginative ideas.
Year 1 Maths: Understanding 10
This week, Year 1 focused on understanding the number 10. We used counters and ten frames to test different number combinations to make our whole number: 10. We also did some SILENT maths, and used our fingers to represent the different number bonds that make 10. To consolidate this knowledge, children worked independently on various activities to reinforce their understanding of number bonds within 10, helping them develop speed and confidence within the subject.
Nursery - Maths - Colours
This maths activity presented the children with multiple rich learning opportunities, all centered around a task of categorising coloured buttons into corresponding coloured bowls. This primary sorting task helped solidify their knowledge of colour, with children encouraged to vocalise the colour name or press the relevant sound button to confirm their selection. While immersed in this focused task, children also had the opportunity to build on their number language and quantity skills. Some successfully counted their buttons, and the activity naturally led to comparing quantity, using early mathematical concepts like 'more' and 'less'. Our older learners showed an extra layer of curiosity, spotting and becoming intrigued by the shaped buttons mixed in, prompting an introduction to different two-dimensional shapes. This simple activity proved highly effective in reinforcing colour, counting, and comparative language simultaneously.
Reception - Maths - 2d Shapes
Our Reception children have been exploring squares as part of our White Rose Maths learning. They looked for squares around the classroom, used sticks to make their own, and talked about what makes a square special. Lots of careful looking, great teamwork and brilliant shape spotting.
Pre-School-Maths-Comparing and sorting.
Today we had a bear-y special time playing with hoops and bears. It was so much fun to learn about "more," "fewer," and "the same"!First, we put our colourful hoops on the floor. Each bear was a different colour – red, blue, yellow, and green! We put some bears in one hoop and some bears in another. Then, we looked to see which hoop had more bears. That means a lot of bears! Which hoop had fewer bears? That means just a little bit. And sometimes, two hoops had the same number of bears! That means they were equal, just alike!
Year 1 - Maths - Sorting 3D Shapes
Year 1 mathematicians worked collaboratively to sort 3D shapes! We explored the properties of cones, cubes, and spheres, deciding if they roll or stack, and why.
Reception Maths - One More Within 5
Our Reception class has been getting stuck into some brilliant early number work this week. We’ve been exploring one more within 5, following the White Rose Maths approach. The children worked together in a circle, taking turns to spot numbers on the carpet and find what comes next. Lots of talking, checking, and little moments of “I know it!” along the way. It’s been lovely to see their confidence grow as they begin to recognise small numbers instantly and understand how numbers build. Simple, hands-on activities like this make the idea of “one more” really click for them.
Nursery - Children In Need Day
Nursery class had a fantastic day celebrating Children in Need with a variety of engaging, spotty-themed activities across the provision. We kicked off the fun with a dance session alongside Pudsey Bear, where the children practiced their gross motor skills by copying his movements and challenging themselves to improve their jumping skills on the floor spots. For our fine motor activities, they worked on mark-making by creating spotty Pudsey pictures using dabbers and circle stickers, and they also practiced drawing circles on the blackboards with chalk. To end the day, the children enjoyed a special treat, sitting down together for a focused story time with Pudsey on the interactive screen. The entire day was a huge hit and a wonderful way to teach the children about helping others!
Year 2 - Maths - Adding two 2-digit numbers
Mastering Two-Digit Addition This week in Maths, Year 2 have been busy developing a key skill: adding two 2-digit numbers together. We have been using Base 10 equipment extensively to support our learning. This practical approach helps the children to clearly understand the value of the tens and ones, which is crucial for building a solid foundation in addition and preparing them for more complex calculations, including 'exchanging' or 'regrouping'. Great work, everyone!
Year 4 Maths Times and Divide
Year 4 have been putting their multiplication and division skills to the test this week in our Maths lessons. We have been finding out the different terms and the patterns of numbers, representing these groups of numbers in different ways with a variety of resources. We have also enjoyed using our Chromebooks in our Maths lessons this week!
Nursery - Maths - Quantity
This week's Maths lesson was inspired by the children's spontaneous interest in farm animals, leading to an engaging, tactile farm set-up in our malleable tray. Immersed in play, the children were naturally drawn to the animals and successfully made connections between the animals and the sounds they made, mooing for a cow, oinking for a pig. While enjoying this imaginative play, they were also building crucial number language and quantity skills. We saw great examples of early counting, with some children counting the animals in each pasture. They worked hard to follow requests that required them to retrieve a specific quantity, such as the instruction, "Can I have two pigs?" This hands-on activity provided a fantastic, concrete way for the children to link abstract numbers to real-world objects.
Year 6: Maths - Fractions
In maths year six have been learning how to add and subtract fractions with different denominators. They have focused on finding the LCM to solve calculations. L.O: To add and subtract fractions.
