Pre-school-Maths-Counting through song
In maths this week, we have been singing nursery rhymes such as Five Little Ducks, Five Speckled Frogs and Five Cheeky Monkeys. The children enjoyed acting them out as they sang. They also had the chance to practise recognising numbers 1 to 5 using flashcards.
Reception - Maths- Matching
The children had a wonderful time in maths today, going outdoors to find different natural objects in the gardens. The children selected leaves and sticks of all different shapes and sizes. When we got back to Reception, we looked through what we had found and started to put some order to them. We were looking for objects that looked the same. Did it have the same colour? Was it the same size? Did they look the same? The children pointed out that the leaves looked the same colour but they were a different size. Sticks matched in length and colour. Working together we matched a lot of the objects up and made groups.
Year 5 Maths - Place Value with Gattegno Charts
Year 5 students have been exploring the fascinating world of place value! Using Gattegno charts, they've been busy mastering how numbers change when we add or subtract 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, or even 100,000. These charts have been a fantastic visual tool, really helping the children grasp the true value of each digit.
Year 2 - Maths - Partitioning Numbers to 100
In maths, Year 2 have been mastering the skill of partitioning numbers up to 100 using part-whole models. This approach helps children to see how a whole number is made up of smaller parts. For example, they can see that the number 42 is made of two parts: 40 (four tens) and 2 (two ones). This activity is building a strong understanding of place value and preparing them for more complex maths.
Year 4 Maths - Partitioning
This week In Maths, Year 4 have been looking at partitioning or splitting up numbers up to 10,000! We have looked at all of the different place values numbers are made up of and how we can make the same number in many different ways.
Nursery And Pre-School - Imaginative Play, Pirates!
The nursery and preschool children have loved the pirate theme this week, quickly selecting dress-up items to transform into swashbuckling pirates. A significant highlight was the children's collaborative effort in constructing a pirate ship using the jumbo building bricks. They worked together, demonstrating emerging cooperation and negotiation skills as they discussed where to place bricks or how to make the ship bigger. Once their magnificent ship was constructed, the children climbed aboard, steering their vessel and actively sailing their ship across the imaginary seas. They eagerly engaged in target practice, throwing 'cannonballs' at 'enemy ships' in the distance. This action-packed segment refined their gross motor skills, including throwing and aiming, and further fueled their imaginative narrative. The rich vocabulary used by adults (e.g., "Ahoy, matey!", "Walk the plank!") was frequently echoed by the children, showcasing developing communication and language skills within their play.
Year 1 - Maths - Time
Help your Year 1 child confidently tell the time to the hour with our engaging "Learning O'Clock" lesson. We combine practical work with clocks and an energetic "O'Clock Bingo" game to make mastering this key skill enjoyable and memorable.
Year 4 Maths
As part of our Maths Fluency, Year 4 have been recapping the 9 times table this week and have enjoyed playing a few different games in different table groups. It has definitely also helped with our 9 times table knowledge!
Year 3 - Times Table Rockstars
Year 3 has been diligently using Times Table Rockstars to boost their times table fluency and recall (or hone their multiplication skills, or master their times tables).
Reception - Maths - Making Maps
This week in maths, Reception have been exploring maps – using our maths eyes to spot shapes, patterns and position as part of our White Rose learning. We looked carefully at a simple story map and then worked together to create our own, using big paper, bold colours and brilliant teamwork! The children talked about where things were, using mathematical language like next to, behind, and in front of. They thought about directions and routes, and even explained their maps to others – practising reasoning skills along the way. White Rose encourages us to see maths in the world around us, and map-making is a great way to build those early spatial and positional skills. Plus, it gets us thinking visually and creatively – perfect for young mathematicians with curious eyes!
Year 1 - Maths - Recognising Notes
In Year 1, we're building essential life skills! Our recent lesson focused on recognizing paper money and notes, helping us understand the value of different denominations. We had a great time learning to identify different coins and notes – a super important step in becoming money smart! Take a look at our progress.
Year 1 - Maths - Recognising Money and Unitising
Our Year 1 mathematicians had a fantastic time exploring the world of coins this week! We sharpened our super-seeing skills by subitising – instantly recognizing the number of coins without counting. It was a brilliant way to build our number sense and get hands-on with money!
