Year 2 have started an exciting new unit focused on instructions! We began by exploring how to play various playground games. The children acted as detectives, using their highlighters to successfully identify the crucial command words (or 'bossy words') that tell us exactly what to do.
Year 2 - Computing - Designing Christmas Cards
Today's Year 2 computing lesson focuses on digital design as students create their very own Christmas cards for the school competition. Using a child-friendly graphic design application (such as a simple drawing tool or a presentation program), children will learn to utilize basic tools like shapes, text boxes, and digital brushes. The key learning objectives are to practice manipulating digital objects and to understand the concept of saving and retrieving digital work. They will select appropriate backgrounds, draw festive pictures, and add personalized messages, encouraging them to think creatively while developing their fundamental mouse and keyboard skills to produce a colorful, unique final entry.

Year 2 - English - Story Maps
Traditional Tales Get a Twist! Year 2 have been busy giving classic stories a fabulous facelift! We've been exploring traditional tales with a twist, proving that sometimes the villains might be nice and the heroes might be naughty! The children used story maps to plan their fantastic ideas: - What if Goldilocks was lovely and the bears were rude? - What if Jack climbed a giant sunflower instead of a beanstalk? - Could an evil wizard have caught Hansel and Gretel instead of a witch? Our amazing authors orally retold their tales and gave brilliant, constructive feedback to their classmates. Now the planning is done, it's time to write! Mrs. Cookson can't wait to read the finished stories at the end of the week.
Year 2 - Maths - Adding two 2-digit numbers
Mastering Two-Digit Addition This week in Maths, Year 2 have been busy developing a key skill: adding two 2-digit numbers together. We have been using Base 10 equipment extensively to support our learning. This practical approach helps the children to clearly understand the value of the tens and ones, which is crucial for building a solid foundation in addition and preparing them for more complex calculations, including 'exchanging' or 'regrouping'. Year 2 - Geography - Human and Physical Features
Geography Walk: Exploring Our Local Area! Year 2 put on their walking shoes this week and became local geography experts! We ventured out into our neighbourhood to identify a variety of human and physical features. The children did a fantastic job distinguishing between natural elements and man-made structures. During our walk, we were able to spot key human features like houses, shops, and speed bumps, alongside physical features such as fields and hills.
Year 2 - RE - The Torah
In RE, we explored the Torah scrolls, the holiest Jewish religious text. We learned that the Torah is handwritten and contains the Ten Commandments from the word of God. Because the scroll cannot be touched directly, readers use a special pointer called a Yad to follow the text.
Year 2 - Science - Life Processes
Our Science lesson was all about the 6 things that keep us alive! We couldn't believe it when we found out that even plants move—like sunflowers turning or roots growing! To share what we learned, we split into teams to make a special show-and-tell about each process.
Year 2 - English - Independent Write
What a fantastic way to wrap up the half term! Year 2 has completely immersed themselves in writing an independent story inspired by the beautiful book, The Way Home for Wolf. Before putting pen to paper, the children researched different animals to weave into their tales and crafted brilliant plans to guide them through the writing process. This preparation paid off, as Mrs. Cookson was absolutely blown away by the huge improvement in writing stamina the class demonstrated. She is incredibly proud of their dedication and can't wait to curl up and read their imaginative final stories!
Year 2 - Art - Autumn Leaves
Year 2 have successfully wrapped up their Explore and Draw art unit! To finish, the children created stunning pictures of autumn leaves using an exciting technique. They first drew the detailed leaf shapes and veins with wax crayons and then painted over the entire piece with watercolors. The magic happened when the paint didn't stick to the crayon, creating a beautiful wax-resist effect that makes the vibrant crayon drawings pop against the watercolor background. The finished artwork looks absolutely amazing and truly captures the beauty of the season!
