Year 2 - Science - Classifying Minibeasts

Have you ever wondered what truly separates a buzzy bee from a slimy snail? Our Year 2 explorers have been finding out this week as they dived headfirst into the wonderful world of minibeasts! Working in collaborative groups, the children turned into budding taxonomists, using their keen observational skills to sort and classify various creatures based on their physical features. From debating the number of legs on a centipede to identifying which insects boast a pair of wings, the classrooms were buzzing with scientific talk. By categorising their finds into groups like "legs vs. no legs" and "wings vs. no wings," the pupils haven't just learned about biology—they’ve mastered the art of logical thinking and teamwork.

Year 2 Maths: Doubling and Halving

Double the Fun in Year 2! Our mathematicians in Year 2 have been busy exploring the magical relationship between doubling and halving this week! Using colorful connecting cubes, the children moved from hands-on building to writing formal calculations. By mastering their 2 times tables, they discovered that doubling a number is just like multiplying by 2, and halving is the same as dividing by 2! It was wonderful to see so many "lightbulb moments" as the children realised that if they know their 2 times-table, they already know how to find double or half! ✨#Year2Maths #HandsOnLearning #YoungMathematicians #DoublingAndHalving #ConcretePictorialAbstract

Year 2 - RE - Exploring Our Church

What makes a building truly special to a community? This week, Year 2 moved their RE lesson beyond the classroom for a visit to the local church to speak with Reverend Kev. The children explored the unique features of the building, discovering the importance of the pulpit, the cross, and the special box used to store the chalice and paten. They were fascinated to see the small wooden box containing the numbers for the hymns and were particularly amazed to look through original parish magazines dating all the way back to 1906. It was a wonderful opportunity for the pupils to learn about the history and sacred objects that make the church such a significant place for so many people. #ReligiousEducation #Year2 #LearningOutsideTheClassroom #Community #PrimaryEducation #RE

Year 2 - Maths - Dividing by Grouping

Have you ever wondered how we can make sure everyone gets an equal share? This week, our Year 2 pupils have been answering that very question by using physical counters to practically group different amounts. Through this hands-on exploration, the children discovered that this process of sharing is called dividing. By physically moving the counters into separate piles, they observed a fundamental mathematical rule in action: when we divide, the resulting answer gets smaller than the number we started with. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they master these essential building blocks of arithmetic. #Mathematics #Year2 #PrimaryEducation #HandsOnLearning #Division

Year 2 - PE - Team Building

How can you find your way when you cannot see where you are going? This week, Year 2 have been putting their communication skills to the test during collaborative challenges in PE. The objective was to develop trust by guiding a blindfolded partner towards coloured cones and then into matching coloured hoops. While the children initially led their partners by the hand, the difficulty increased when they progressed to using only their voices. This shift required the pupils to think critically about how to give clear, precise instructions to ensure their partner felt safe and successful. It was a fantastic session that showcased the children's growing empathy and their ability to lead others through calm, effective communication. #PhysicalEducation #Year2 #CommunicationSkills #PrimaryPE #TrustGames #SchoolSports

Year 2 - Art - Mono Printing

Ever wondered how a single print can capture a world of storytelling? ????✨ Our Year 2 artists have been diving deep into the vibrant world of Xgaoc’o X’are, a renowned artist celebrated for his incredible ability to blend cultural heritage with modern printmaking. Inspired by X’are’s focus on animals and movement, the children have been busy getting their hands a little messy while mastering the unique processes of monoprinting and carbon printing. Using a mix of bold ink and smudgy charcoal, our young creators practiced transferring their unique designs onto paper, discovering exactly how pressure and layering can transform a simple sketch into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. It was wonderful to see them experiment with the different textures of charcoal versus ink, and we are so proud of the artistic curiosity they showed in every print! #Year2Art #YoungArtists #XgaocoXare #PrintmakingKids #CreativeClassroom #PrimaryArt

Year 2 - Maths - Active Learning

Who knew that mastering money could be such a cardio workout? This week, our Year 2s took over the school hall for an energetic "Human Bank" challenge to put their addition skills to the test. Working in teams, the children had to plan how to make the amounts displayed on the board, with one member at a time sprinting the length of the hall to retrieve a single coin. The real breakthrough came when the children discovered the power of mathematical efficiency; they quickly realised that fetching a single 5p coin was much faster than making five separate trips for 1ps! It was a fantastic display of teamwork and strategic thinking, proving that the fastest way to the finish line is often the smartest way to count. #Year2Maths #ActiveLearning #PrimaryEducation #MathsIsFun #Teamwork #FinancialLiteracy

Year 2 - English - Non-Fiction Texts

Can you tell the difference between a fairytale and a fact file? This week, Year 2 swapped the classroom for the quiet corners of the library to explore the fascinating world of non-fiction. As they delved into a variety of information books, the children had brilliant discussions about how these texts differ from their favourite storybooks, identifying key features like glossaries, indexes, and contents pages. The biggest "lightbulb moment" came when they realised that while stories take us on imaginary adventures, non-fiction is a treasure trove of real-world facts! It was wonderful to see their curiosity grow as they discovered how to navigate these books to find answers about the world around them. #Year2English #LibraryVisit #NonFiction #PrimaryLiteracy #FactFinders #ReadingForPleasure
