Year 2 Geography: Collect and Present Data
Our Year 2 geographers were out doing fieldwork to investigate the wildlife and plants right on our doorstep! We’ve been busy collecting primary data to see exactly what shares our local environment, from moss and grass to ants and flies.
Year 6: Geography - Solar Farm Debate
This week in Geography, Year 6 have put together their previous learning and had a debate around the issue of solar farms. We used voice 21 talk tactics to instigate, build and challenge each other during the debate. Some really interesting points were raised!
Reception- Geography- Our Town
This week, our Reception explorers have been diving deep into our literacy focus, ‘The London Bus’, using the story’s journey through the capital as a springboard for our own local adventures. Inspired by the famous landmarks in the book, we shifted our focus closer to home to celebrate our town of Darwen. The children enjoyed reflecting on the familiar spots they have visited with their families and sharing exciting ideas about where they’d like to go next. Using these discussions as a blueprint, our young architects took to the construction area to recreate Darwen’s iconic skyline. It was wonderful to see their creativity in action as they selected different-sized blocks to represent the unique shapes of Darwen Tower, the Library, and the bustling Town Centre. From the greenery of Bold Venture Park to the local Swimming Baths and even a very busy Asda, the children demonstrated fantastic spatial awareness and teamwork while bringing our local community to life.
Nurser/Pre-School-Geography-Understanding The World-Little Gardeners
The children had a fabulous week in the sunshine! They truly enjoyed getting muddy as they transformed into little gardeners. After choosing a special spot in our outdoor space, the children planted a variety of blooms, seeds, and bulbs. They have since loved watering their plants and sitting quietly in their new garden, watching and waiting for them to grow.
Year 6: Geography - Energy
This week in Geography, Year 6 have been researching different energy sources, and thinking about the differences between renewable and non-renewable energy. We looked at how demand for energy has changed over time, with the growth in the global population, and the emphasis this has placed on renewable energy sources.
Year 1 Geography UK Weather
Little Geographers in the Making! Our Year One explorers have been busy diving into the world of UK Weather this week! From identifying clouds to prepping for those classic British rainy days, these bright minds are learning how the world works around them—one forecast at a time. It’s all part of our mission: Nurturing Ambition and curiosity from the very start. Learning Focus: Geography & Local Environments Skills: Group collaboration and observation Current Mood: 100% chance of fun! ☔☀️ #DarwenStJames #YearOne #EarlyYearsLearning #UKWeather #LittleGeographers #NurturingAmbition #PrimaryEducation
Year 4 Geography - Where does our food come from?
Our Geography topic is all about the different types of foods we eat, where these are grown or sourced and how far it travels to get to us. We have learnt that the food we get from other countries are called imports. This week, we have been looking at the different types of imported foods and used atlases / maps to find out where that country is, in relation to the UK. We were amazed to find out the average cup of coffee has travelled around 8,000km to reach us!
Year 1 - Geography - Compass Directions
Our young explorers have been busy mastering the four cardinal directions in Geography this week. From identifying North, South, East, and West to mapping out the classroom around them, they are well on their way to becoming expert navigators! It’s wonderful to see such great focus and "direction" in their learning. #Year1 #GeographySkills #YoungExplorers #PrimaryEducation #CompassPoints
Nursery - Geography - Science - Ice Exploration
This lesson was sparked by the children's natural curiosity during outdoor play, when they discovered vehicles "stuck" in the ice. This led to a focused exploration on Friday, where the children set off into the garden equipped with tools like hammers and forks to "save" the frozen vehicles. The children demonstrated fantastic teamwork as they worked together to hit and scrape the ice. This provided a great opportunity for them to observe the physical properties of materials; they noticed that the ice was hard and were fascinated by the cracking sounds and visual patterns as it began to break apart. Their excitement grew as they successfully freed the cars from the ice. The children observed a change in state compared to yesterday, noticing that there was now water in the tray. This sparked a meaningful conversation about ice melting, which they explored further by splashing in the water. To enhance the sensory experience and encourage further investigation, the children were supplied with paint and textured brushes to mark-make directly onto the remaining ice and in the water, combining scientific observation with creative expression.
Year 1 - Geography - Where is the UK?
Wait... we live on an island?! There’s nothing quite like the look on a Year 1 pupil's face when they realise that if they keep driving in one direction for long enough, they’ll eventually hit the sea! This week, we’ve been using our Kapow Primary geography units to answer a big question: Where is the UK? It’s been so much fun watching the children huddle around maps and globes. We’ve been: Hunting for the four countries (and debating which one has the coolest flag—Wales usually wins! ). Learning the names of our capital cities. Discovering that we are surrounded by water on all sides. The best part of the lesson? Watching them try to find their own town on the map. Even though we look tiny on a big world map, it really helps them see how we’re connected to the rest of the planet. Geography in KS1 is all about that "lightbulb moment" where the world suddenly feels a little bit smaller and a lot more interesting.
Year 5 Geography - Using Digital and Ordnance Survey Maps
This week in Geography, Year 5 engaged in a detailed comparative study of our local area using both digital maps and Ordnance Survey (OS) maps. We began our search using Google Maps to identify key human features in our locality, compiling a comprehensive list of tourist spots, leisure facilities, restaurants, bars, transport hubs, and hotels. Students then transferred these analytical skills to the OS maps of Darwen, using the specific OS symbols key to locate and interpret a wide variety of different points of interest, finding the activity highly rewarding and a lot of fun!
Reception- PSHE-Gruffalo Hunt
This week, Reception class stepped into the deep dark wood and enjoyed an exciting, cross-curricular Gruffalo Hunt! We used our investigative skills to search around the school grounds for the familiar characters from Julia Donaldson's much-loved story. The children were thrilled to spot the fox, the owl, the snake, and, of course, the fearsome Gruffalo himself! Following our successful hunt, we gathered to discuss the story's true hero: the little Mouse. We talked about how the Mouse used his wits and bravery to outsmart all the bigger, scarier animals. The children were brilliant at identifying what it means to be brave, even when you are feeling a little scared. The highlight of the discussion was sharing our own personal stories. Each child had a chance to talk about a time they were brave—whether it was trying a new food, going on a tall slide, or sleeping without their nightlight. It was wonderful to see the children supporting each other and celebrating their courage! This activity was a fantastic way to combine our literacy skills with our Personal, Social, and Emotional Development (PSED), helping us understand that even the smallest among us can be the bravest.
