Year 6: Maths - Learning by Questions
As an extension task at the end of our maths lessons, year 6 have been working on their individualised targets to help with SATs revision. The questions are tailored to the students' specific areas of improvement. The class have been enjoying these challenges!
Reception - Maths - 2D and 3D Shapes
This week, the children have been busy exploring 2D and 3D shapes in a variety of fun and engaging ways. They have been identifying and naming different shapes, using them to build structures, and hunting for shapes in the environment around them. Through these activities, the children have been developing their mathematical thinking, strengthening their ability to recognize and describe shapes—key skills in the EYFS Mathematics framework. They have been using language to talk about the properties of shapes, such as the number of sides, corners, and faces, deepening their understanding of spatial awareness. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity and excitement as they discover how shapes are all around us!
Pre-School- Maths- Give Me 1,2,3
In Pre-School the children have been developing their understanding with number recognition (1, 2, 3) and counting, one-to-one correspondence. The children used the post box to post the teddy bears into the post box, counting along the way. We rolled the dice to see how many bears we needed to post. The activity introduced the numbers 1, 2, and 3, and more when needed and counting the number of bears clearly. When the children reached their number of bears they had been asked for they worked together to see if they needed more or less to add in the post box.
Year 1 Maths - Comparing Capacity
In Year 1, your child is learning about capacity – how much something can hold. This lesson focuses on comparing the capacity of different containers using terms like 'full,' 'empty,' 'more than,' 'less than,' and 'the same as.' We used hands-on activities to make learning fun and engaging, helping them develop practical skills and a solid understanding of measurement concepts. Get ready for some water play (and maybe a few spills!) as we explore the world of capacity.
Nursery - Maths - Positional Language
During our Maths activity this week, Nursery class have been exploring positional language. The children built on their understanding of on top and under, repeating the position as they placed bear in different areas around the basket. Some children were also able to further their learning and introduced 'next to' and 'in front' to their vocabulary, representing these positions with bear. Well done everyone!
Reception - Maths - Number bonds
To support their understanding of number bonds to 10, the children today participated in a Numicon-based activity in small groups. This session encouraged collaboration, with some children taking on the active role of "Numicon detectives" to physically explore and identify the number combinations that total ten. To consolidate their learning, one child from each group was responsible for writing down the different number bonds they found. This multi-faceted approach allowed for both hands-on exploration and the development of recording skills.
Year 1 - Maths - Measuring Using Centimeters
Year 1 used rulers to measure various objects around the classroom in centimeters. They were very careful to line up the object to 0 on the ruler and look at where the object ended to work out its length.
Year 2 Maths - Volume and Capacity - Measuring in Millilitres
Year 2 have had a great week in Maths learning more about volume and capacity and using the correct units of measurement.
Nursery - Maths - Literacy - Pattern Matching And Tracing
This week, Nursery class have been looking at different patterns. The children were given a pattern that they had to match with the ones shown on the board. They were then tasked with describing what they could see, zig zag, bubbles, rainbow, dots, cross etc. They were then challenged to trace their patterns on the board with their fingers, we have continued this learning in provision as the children have been exploring drawing their patterns at the craft table and on the ground in our outdoor area with chalk. Well done everybody.
Reception - Maths - One More Than
Today, the children engaged in a hands-on counting activity using ten frames and pom-poms while listening to the story Mouse Count. Each child was given their own ten frame and a selection of objects to use as manipulatives. As the story was read aloud, the children actively participated by adding one more object to their ten frame each time a new mouse was added in the story. They demonstrated careful counting, one-to-one correspondence, and an increasing awareness of number sequences. Some children excitedly anticipated the next number, while others carefully placed each object, checking their total as they went. This activity helped reinforce counting skills in a meaningful and engaging way, encouraging children to connect the story with mathematical concepts. The children enjoyed the interactive experience, showing confidence and enthusiasm as they filled their ten frames.
Year 1 - Maths - Comparing Length And Height
Year 1 started their unit on length and height by comparing objects in the classroom. They made sure that they compared two objects fairly by giving them the same starting point. They used the vocabulary of compare, longer and shorter.
Year 5 Maths - Equivalent Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
In maths, Year 5 have been learning equivalence in fractions, decimals and percentages. They are showing their understanding of converting fractions or decimals to percentages on their whiteboards.
