Year 2 Science: Testing Stretchiness
Our Year 2 scientists put materials to the ultimate test! Working in expert teams, we investigated which everyday items have the best elasticity. From paper and string to plastic and rubber, the children used their "fair testing" skills to see which would snap and which would stretch! Brilliant observations and even better teamwork, Year 2!
Year 2 English: Creating Adjectives
Year 2 took their English lesson outside today to transform our playground with comparative and superlative adjectives! Using colourful chalk, the children turned the tarmac into a giant word map. They described how our playground looks now and how they want it to look in the future using the -er and -est suffixes. It was a brilliant way to see our learning in action while reimagining our school space!
Year 2 Maths: Capacity
Making a Splash with Maths! Our Year 2 mathematicians swapped their pens for measuring cups to dive into the world of capacity! The mission? To estimate and measure exactly how many cups of water it takes to fill different containers. From tall bottles to wide bowls, we discovered that looks can be very deceiving!
Year 2 PE: Defending skills
Our Year 2 athletes were on fire in PE, mastering the art of defending! We’ve been learning that a great team isn't just about scoring goals... It’s about stopping them, too! From "ready stances" to quick footwork, the children showed fantastic focus in our goalkeeping games.
Year 2 Maths: Times-tables challenge
Year 2 Rock Battles! The classroom was electric today as our Times Tables Rock Stars took to the stage! We’ve been smashing our personal bests to level up our 2, 5, and 10 times tables - even Miss Mulligan had a go to show that practice makes progress! We are looking forward to battling the other classes and really testing our multiplication knowledge!
Year 1 & 2 STEM Challenge: How do birds make nests?
Year 1 and 2 turned into Ornithologists to hunt for natural nest materials, then switched to Structural Engineers to build nests that met our three "Bird-Approved" criteria: strong, waterproof and comfy! The nests were put to the test with a fan that represented the wind birds might face in their natural habitat and everyone's nest survived!
Year 2: Lunar New Year dance workshop
Dancing Through the Great Race! Our hall was alive with energy as our pupils took part in a vibrant Lunar New Year Dance Workshop! To celebrate the Year of the Horse, the children didn't just learn about the Legend of the Great Race... They lived it! Through movement and choreography, they told the story of how the twelve animals of the Zodiac crossed the finish line.
Year 2 D&T: Problem solving to make a sturdy base.
Engineering in Action! Our Year 2 inventors have been busy putting their Design & Technology skills to the test this week... The classroom was transformed into a construction site! The children were challenged to take everyday recycled packaging and turn it into a stable, sturdy base capable of supporting a rotating wheel. It wasn't as easy as it looks! What we learned: Problem Solving: When a structure wobbled, our young designers had to figure out why. Triangulation: We discovered that some shapes are much stronger than others! Reinforcement: Learning how to use masking tape and tabs to create "strong joins." The resilience on display was incredible—there were plenty of "oops" moments, but even more "aha!" moments.
World Book Day Reading Cafe
???? A Page-Turning Success: Our World Book Day Reading Café! What a brilliant way to celebrate World Book Day! It was truly wonderful to see our school community come together to transform the hall into a buzzing hub of stories, snacks, and shared imagination. From pupils to parents, the turn-out was fantastic, and the atmosphere was even better. Here’s a look at the highlights from our literary celebration: ????️ The Great Masked Reader Hunt The highlight of the afternoon was undoubtedly our Masked Reader Hunt. It was a joy to watch everyone turn into literary detectives! Using a series of clever clues, pupils had to figure out which teachers were hiding behind their favourite books. ???? A Marvellous Finale To wrap up the event, Miss Peckson took to the "reading throne" to share a chapter from her all-time favourite: George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. There’s nothing quite like the magic of being read to, and you could have heard a pin drop as we followed George's mischievous concoctions. Why it Matters At the heart of today’s event is a simple but powerful goal: fostering a lifelong love of reading. Reading isn't just about literacy; it’s about empathy, adventure, and expanding our horizon. Seeing our pupils enjoying books together reminds us that a good story is one of the best ways to connect with each other. "A book is a dream that you hold in your hand." – Neil Gaiman #WorldBookDay #ReadingCafe #LoveOfReading #SchoolCommunity
Year 2 Maths: Measuring in centimetres.
Measuring fever has hit Year 2 as we get to grips with centimetres! Our young mathematicians have been busy putting their ruler skills to the test, learning how to line up the '0' precisely to find the exact length of various classroom objects. There was a fantastic buzz in the room as the children compared their findings and practised using accurate mathematical language to describe their measurements. From pencils to glue sticks, nothing was safe from our rulers!
Year 2 English: Retelling a story with a familiar setting.
Our Year 2 pupils have been diving headfirst into the wonderful world of story-telling! To explore our current text, "After the Storm", the children took to the stage for a dynamic partner freeze-frame task. It was brilliant to see the classroom buzzing with respectful listening and creative energy. The pupils have already gathered a treasure trove of superb vocabulary, and they are now fully primed to bring their own familiar-setting stories to life. What is your favourite story to tell? Let us know in the comments!
Year 2 Science: Grouping everyday materials based on properties and functions.
Year 2 Material Detectives! Our Year 2 scientists have been busy investigating Everyday Materials this week! The children put their thinking caps on to explore why objects are made from specific materials. We looked at why a plate could be made from plastic, paper and metal but a toy for a baby probably shouldn't be made from glass... What we achieved: Property Experts: We matched materials like wood, plastic, and metal to their uses based on their unique properties. Sorting Stars: We successfully grouped objects by their materials, properties of the materials and functions of the objects. Join in the fun! If you had to build a house out of something from your lunchbox, what would you choose and why? Let us know in the comments! #Year2Science #STEM #PrimaryScience #UKTeachers #MaterialWorld
